Shaun Hayman, aged 34, was found lying in the hallway of his flat in The Pungle, Westhoughton, on Sunday.
His mother, Angela, had become concerned after trying unsuccessfully to make contact with him, and his brother Paul called police after being unable to get into the flat.
One of three brothers, Mr Hayman was also an uncle to Paul's daughter Mya, aged two, and son Lucas - born just a day before the tragedy.
Paul Hayman, aged 32, said: "Shaun had so many friends - he was a lovable sort of bloke and a great mate to people.
"He was wonderful with Mya and with his friends' children - it is a shame he never got to see Lucas."
Shaun was last seen celebrating a friend's 50th birthday at his local pub, The White Horse, in Bolton Road, Westhoughton, on Saturday night.
He had set up the pub's darts team and helped manage its football team.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and the incident is not being treated as suspicious. The file has been passed to the coroner."

Another year has gone since that sad day Shaun but the heartache is still as strong as the day you passed away.
